Jamun or Jambul (Syzygium cumini), is a berry like fruit grown on an evergreen tropical tree from the flowering plant family Myrtaceae. Jamun is mot famously known for it’s use in the Indian system of Ayurveda for benefits among diabetics.
Jambul contains: phenols (methylxanthoxylin), tannins, alkaloid (jambosine), triterpenoids, volatile oil.
According to Hindu tradition, Rama subsisted on the fruit in the forest for 14 years during his exile from Ayodhya. Because of this, many Hindus regard jambul as a 'fruit of the gods,' especially in Gujarat, India, where it is known locally as jamboon.
